Client Spotlight: The Perfect Privacy Solution for the Richmond Common House

Solar Film • Jan 25, 2021

At 305 W. Broad Street in the Richmond Arts District, you’ll find the city’s newest co-working space and social club: The Common House. Co-founders Ben Pfinsgraff and Derek Sieg decided to replicate the success of their Charlottesville location in Virginia’s capital. This newly-renovated historic building opened its doors back in October, offering monthly memberships ranging from $50 for out-of-town members to $225 for local couples.

The Common House serves multiple functions, including an event venue, co-working space, hangout spot, restaurant, and bar. Complete with a coffee shop, movie-viewing room, wine cellar, and event space for weddings and other gatherings, this is not your typical co-working space. Members enjoy opportunities to connect with one another and learn about new topics through programs such as yoga, cookie decorating, and live music events. When it is time to work, there are open-concept workspaces available to all members. There are also individual offices reserved for businesses or members to rent.

Privacy Film for Offices in the Richmond Common House

The Richmond Common House consulted Solar Film very early in the renovation planning phase. As a result, that relationship facilitated an introduction to our sister company, Specialty Drapery, to design and install the Common House’s window treatments. Alex Jansen was the window film consultant on this project, and he worked closely with Taylor Moody, the Operations & Office Administrator at the Common House.

Privacy Meets Modern Elegance

The Common House’s primary concern was privacy because the individual offices are directly off the main hallway. Alex listened to the client’s needs and preferences before creating a privacy solution that was cohesive with their design vision. He suggested Solyx Dusted Crystal frosted film for the glass walls of the podcast room and offices. This versatile film offered a simple, clean look that tied in with the Common House’s aesthetic seamlessly.

The Transformation: Before & After

Before:

After:

The installation occurred after the Common House’s official opening. Solar Film’s technicians discreetly worked around the Common House occupants to install the frosted film in the twenty-five offices. This highlights the unobtrusive nature of window film installation. Replacing the clear glass with etched glass would have temporarily displaced occupants, whereas film application allows for continuity of operations.

Alex thoroughly enjoyed working with everyone at the Common House to make the project a success. The product selection and installation process went very smoothly, and the client is thrilled with the result. Furthermore, we couldn’t be more pleased to have left our mark on this lively hub of human connection.
