Debunking the Most Common Window Film Myths

Solar Film • Jan 29, 2019

After being in the window film industry for over 35 years, we’ve heard it all. There are many misconceptions about window tinting, so we’d like to address several of the most common window film myths we have heard.

Window Film MythsMyth #1: Window Film will make my windows look dark

We’ve all seen the sports car with practically opaque windows cruising down the street. You may see that and think, “I don’t want my home to look like that!” Never fear.  Solar Film offers a wide variety of window films with varying tint shades. Another way of saying this is that there are options for the amount of visible light transmission through your windows. Many of our films appear virtually invisible.

Myth #2: Window Film only provides value in the summer

Window film benefits you year round. It not only rejects the sun’s heat in the summer; it also insulates your home from the cold winter air. Aside from temperature control, window tint also provides UV protection, glare reduction, and safety & security features all year long.

Myth #3: Results from window film won’t last long term

When applied correctly, window film can last for the lifetime of your windows. However, in the event that your window film does begin peeling, bubbling, or changing color over time, the 3M warranty covers your investment if the film was installed by a 3M Authorized Window Film Dealer, such as Solar Film. This ensures longterm results from your window film.

Myth #4: Window Film is too expensive

While window film is certainly a luxury product, there are a variety of price points that it can meet. Some types of window film cost more per square foot than others, so selecting one of Solar Film’s lower cost options can help you stay on budget. It’s also important to note that not every window needs to be tinted in order for you to reap the benefits of window film. Window orientation and the layout of your space play a large role in determining which windows would benefit the most from tint.

Myth #5: Window Film will damage my windows

Many of our potential clients express concern that tinting their windows will cause cracking and seal breakage. This is myth is false, when the film is applied by a reputable, experienced window film installer like Solar Film.  Different films are made for different types of windows. Whether the glass is single-pane, double-pane, or low-e will determine which variety of window film will work best. The Solar Film team offers a wealth of knowledge and expertise to help you select the right film for your windows and particular application.

These are only a handful of the window film myths we’ve heard over the years. We hope that by debunking these common misconceptions about window tinting, more people will realize the immense value that window film brings.
